Continous advancements in anesthetic technology have promoted surgical technology development, amongst which, plastic surgery is one of the most influenced fields. In Colombia, anesthesia is a specialty controled by the law in which it is stipulated that the person who performs the anesthetic procedure is required to be a professional in medicine, trained specifically in this field and must fullfill all the requirements to do so. In plastic surgery in particular, the anesthesiologist must be aware at all times that the highest standards in their field are being met for the patient. SAFETY is one of the main objectives in the anesthetic procedure of a plastic surgery patient. This is why the first pre-surgical stage is to have a proper evaluation on behalf of the anestehsiologist. In this evaluation the main health of the patient is evaluated, along with any other factors that may affect the proper effect of the anestesia by means of laboratory exams. With this information the anesthetic posibilities are examined and the doctor will present the most used types of anestesia for the specific surgical procedure. The patient must have a written consent to aprove the surgery and anesthetic procedure.
Techniques used The following are anesthetic procedures that may be carried out by a anesthesiologist.
Local Assisted Anesthesia: In this type of procedure the anesthesiologist uses sedatives intravenously, which are medicines used to reduce anxiety and pain, afterawrds local inyections are used to block the area in which the surgeon will work. All of this under strict supervisión on behalf of the anesthesiologist who must monitor all the actions in the operation room to ensure the safety of the patient.
General Anesthesia 1) Intravenous General Anesthesia. In this type of anestesia the doctor aims to have the patient in an unconscious state through intravenously applied medicines, requireing the patient to be conected to a respirator for permanent support. The anesthesiologist will monitor every minute of the surgery. 2) Inhaled General Anesthesia. In this type of anesthesia the patient is unconsious and sedated with the inhaled gases, requieing the patient to have permanent respiratory support.
Epidural Anesthesia. In this type of anesthesia the doctor aims to block the sensibility on the specific zones that are to be manipulated during the surgery, by means of infltration of local anesthetics applied in the lower back, directly in the spine. This way the medicines are applied to block specific areas of the body directly on the nervous system allowing this type of anesthesia to be the most widely used in augmentation mammaplasties, liposuctions, tummy tucks, prosthetic implants, etc. This way the anesthetic procedure is and must be performed always by a trained professional whose responsability and main objective is to ensure the safety of the patient by avoiding any type of complication during the surgery.
