Chemical Peel |
The Chemical Peeling is a cosmetic procedure in which a chemical solution is used to allow the removal of the external layers of the skin that have been damaged by the sun, of some slight or delicate wrinkles making the skin look younger. It is a procedure that can be made alone or together with the Face Lift, but it will never replace Facial Aesthetic Surgery.
In some occasions this Chemical Peeling can remove pre-cancerous lesions like the actinic and solar queratosis, some superficial acne scars and the stains produced by the sun and contraceptives.
I recommend my patients the use of Blue Peeling, a chemical peeling whose base is trichloroacetic acid (ATC) and to which a base is added produced by Obagi. This gives the peeling a blue color, which varies of light to dark, according to the concentration that is applied to perform the peeling. The application of this treatment requires the patient to have an initial preparation of the skin, which is made with products that contain hydroquinone and retinoic acid, according to the recommendations and individual adjustments that the patient makes the Plastic Surgeon. During this time it is very important the patients’ use of solar protection since he is in the pre-peeling phase. Initially in this phase of the treatment the skin will suffer redness and will be prompt to loose excess skin cells. This might be annoying for the patient but they are necessary for a perfect adaptation of the skin. Passed this phase the patient can carry out the application of the Blue Peeling.
Blue Peeling Application
Depending on the patient's disposition, the application can be performed in the medical clinic or in a room of small surgery. If the application is carried out in the clinic, anesthesia and sedation are orally taken by the patient, half hour before the procedure is used. If it is carried out in a small surgery room, sedation is used before and during the procedure so that the patient is more relaxed. The application of the peeling produces a sensation of skin burn that diminishes in the measure that the different layers of the peeling are applied and the skin starts taking a blue color that will vary from light to dark. The color varies according to the different layers and concentration of ATC that is being applied for the treatment and the benefits wanted to obtain from the agreement with each patient's physical discoveries. The number of layers can vary from 1 to 6 according to each patient's individual necessity. Concluded the application of the product the patient can go home with the appropriate analgesic medication.
Post-peeling
The patients can show a small nuisance and edema taken place by the application of the ATC that will disappear with the course of the days. The blue coloration that has taken the skin will start disappearing progressively and the skin will begin to flake as new skin appears. It is important that the patient in these first days keeps a rest, washes his face twice a day with a prescribed soap and later apply a blended moisturizing cream with a hydroquinone cream so that the skin stays drier instead of humid. The bigger concentration of the ATC and the more number of layers, the disappearance of the blue tone of the skin will be slower. The patient should protect from the sun in this initial period, until achieved total recovery.
The application of the peeling can be made every fourth week until achieving the wanted effect, and the application of the hydroquinone and the retinoic acid can also be continue to preserve the effects longer.
The blue peeling is quite safe without photo sensibility and without mayor complications in its application. The percentage of complications is minimum, when it is treated by an experienced doctor.
